Their shells were divided into chambers with the animal living in the chamber nearest the opening. The hollow chambers were connected by a tube, which allowed the animal to fill them with water or air to change its buoyancy. These mollusks had both eyes and tentacles and ranged in size from 1/2 inch to 6 feet across. Ammonites are ancestors of the present day sea snail.
